The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opened up an investigation against Google on January 8, 2021, for their proposed removal of third party cookies. The investigation comes as a response to several complaints filed on the matter. According to the complaints, the removal of third-party cookies represents an abuse of Google's dominant market position. While third-party cookies are not free of data privacy concerns, removal of the cookies would render it impossible for businesses to effectively target their advertising to consumers.
