On 11 November 2024, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) adopted the update report on its assessment of Google’s implementation of privacy sandbox commitments. The report details the progress made in addressing competition and privacy concerns, focusing on Google’s compliance with the commitments made in 2022 pertaining to its privacy sandbox and the implications of its revised approach to third-party cookies. The report highlighted that the commitments were being reconsidered by CMA following Google’s decision to give users a choice on whether to allow third-party cookies rather than removing them entirely. The report highlighted the privacy risks with the use of the privacy sandbox tools, particularly regarding compliance with data protection laws, where responsibility mostly falls on the users of these tools. The report also noted that certain concerns raised previously have been resolved by Google, including strengthening cross-site boundaries, fighting spam and fraud on the web and limiting covert tracking.
