On 4 July 2025, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) closed its consultation on its notice of intention to release commitments previously accepted from Google in relation to its Privacy Sandbox proposals. The commitments were originally accepted under section 31A of the Competition Act 1998 during an investigation into Google's conduct in the browser market, addressing concerns over the removal of third-party cookies and the introduction of Privacy Sandbox tools. They included transparency measures, testing obligations and non-discriminatory access to Chrome APIs. Following Google's announcement that it will not block third-party cookies in general browsing or introduce a standalone prompt, the CMA provisionally concluded that the original competition concerns may no longer arise. The CMA will consider all submissions received from interested third parties before making a final decision on whether to release the commitments.
