On 24 September 2024, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) issued a statement expressing that concerns remain about competition issues with Google’s revised Privacy Sandbox changes. Google previously proposed to revise its approach to the Privacy Sandbox by allowing users to choose whether to retain third party cookies. Following a consultation on the revised approach, the CMA stated that Google's commitments should be updated to reflect the evolution of Google's planned Privacy Sandbox browser changes, and the CMA will discuss necessary adjustments with Google. If no agreement is reached, the CMA will consider further action. A public consultation is planned for the fourth quarter of 2024 on whether to accept any updates. The CMA will also provide an update on the Privacy Sandbox tools and testing results at that time. Additionally, the CMA will continue collaborating with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) to address privacy and user choice concerns.
