On 13 June 2025, the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) opened a public consultation on its notice of intention to release commitments previously accepted from Google in relation to its Privacy Sandbox proposals. The consultation remains open until 4 July 2025. These commitments were originally made in the context of the CMA’s investigation into Google’s suspected abuse of a dominant position in the market for web browsers, specifically concerning its plans to replace third-party cookies in Chrome with Privacy Sandbox technologies. In light of Google’s revised approach, under which third-party cookies will not be blocked in general browsing and browser-wide prompts will not be implemented, the CMA has provisionally concluded that the original competition concerns may no longer arise.
