On 5 April 2023, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) closed its consultation on the Issues Paper for the seventh (September 2023) interim report of the Digital Platform Services Inquiry on “expanding ecosystems of digital platform service providers”. The Issues Paper collected views from consumers, businesses and interested stakeholders on the impact of the expanding digital platform ecosystems on the Australian economy, including increased risks of potential competition and consumer issues such as consumer lock-in and reduced choice. Notably, the ACCC Report will examine the role of data the expansion strategies of digital platforms and will consider the extent to which providers use data collected across their ecosystem legitimately. Furthermore, the Report will consider how the expanded ecosystems have impacted the collection and use of personal data of Australian users. The ACCC will submit its report by 30 September 2023.
