On 23 June 2025, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) published the final report of its Digital Platform Services Inquiry, marking the conclusion of a multi-year review of competition and consumer concerns in digital platform markets. The report covers three main themes. It examines international developments in digital competition regulation, explores unfair trading practices and dispute resolution processes, and reviews recent trends in services such as online private messaging, app marketplaces, mobile operating systems, digital advertising technology, and general online retail marketplaces. It also highlights emerging issues in areas like cloud computing, generative artificial intelligence, and online gaming. The ACCC reaffirms the need for regulatory reform, supports the creation of a new digital competition regime, and advocates for a broad ban on unfair trading practices. The report recommends that the ACCC continue to monitor new technologies and urges the Australian Government to adopt a coordinated approach to digital regulation, including making the Digital Platform Regulators Forum (DP-REG) a permanent and properly resourced body.
