On 11 November 2022, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) released the fifth interim report for the Digital Platform Services Inquiry, focusing on regulatory reform. The report recommended new measures to address consumer protection challenges it identified and ensure fair competition for SMEs. The ACCC reiterated its support for economy-wide reforms to better address the rapid expansion of digital platform services. In particular, the report recommended several provisions requiring platforms to provide user-friendly mechanisms for reporting scams or false reviews and verifying their business users. Furthermore, the report noted that dispute resolution mechanisms should be provided to consumers and SMEs. The report also recommended a new regulatory regime to address the anti-competitive behaviour of large digital platforms.
