On 28 April 2023, the Australia Competition and Consumers Commission (ACCC) published its sixth interim report for the Digital Platform Services Inquiry on social media service. The report outlines competition and consumer issues in the provision of social media services to consumers and businesses in Australia by social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, Pinterest, BeReal and LinkedIn. In addition, the report highlights several competition and consumer harms occurring across social media services, including the market power of Meta, collection and use practices around data, lack of effective dispute resolution mechanisms, the effects of illegal scams, lack of advertising transparency, and inadequate disclosures by influencers.
