On 24 October 2022, the European Council approved the Radio Equipment Directive harmonising chargers for most electronic devices to the USB-C standard. Specifically, USB-C is to become the required port for smartphones, tablets, headphones, speakers, and game consoles, among others. Furthermore, the producers of chargers are bound to install the same fast charging technology across devices. Finally, chargers are to be sold separately from electronic devices. The Directive will come into effect 20 days after it is published in the Official Journal of the European Union, with a grace period of 24 months after publication.
