On 23 September 2021, the European Commission (EC) proposed a revision of the Radio Equipment Directive in an effort to harmonize the charger for most electronic devices to USB-C. Specifically, USB-C is to become the required port for smartphones, tablets, headphones, speakers, and game consoles, among others. Furthermore, the producers of chargers are bound to install the same fast charging technology across devices. Finally, chargers are to be sold separately from electronic devices. The measure is planned to come into effect in autumn 2024 after it is formally approved and published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
