On 7 June 2022, the European Parliament and the European Council reached a provisional agreement on the revision of the Radio Equipment Directive that includes the harmonisation of chargers for most electronic devices to the USB-C standard. Specifically, USB-C is to become the required port for smartphones, tablets, headphones, speakers, and game consoles, among others. Furthermore, the producers of chargers are bound to install the same fast charging technology across devices. Finally, chargers are to be sold separately from electronic devices. The measure is planned to come into effect in autumn 2024 after it is formally approved and published in the Official Journal of the European Union.
