Indonesia: Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs restored access to Wikimedia Commons following false content detection under automated blocking system

Description

Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs restored access to Wikimedia Commons following false content detection under automated blocking system

On 25 March 2026, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs restored access to Wikimedia Commons and clarified that the temporary restrictions had resulted from automated content detection systems that incorrectly flagged gambling-related material. The Ministry explained that the incident was further compounded by the platform not being whitelisted, as it had not completed its registration as a Private Electronic System Operator. It also reiterated that online platforms operating in Indonesia are subject to content moderation and registration requirements, under which non-registered services may be subject to blocking or restricted access. In this context, the Ministry called on Wikimedia to complete its registration promptly in order to ensure compliance and reduce the risk of similar disruptions in the future.
