On 7 February 2022, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) issued the third chapter of its draft guidance on “Anonymisation, pseudonymisation and privacy-enhancing technologies” and opened a public consultation on the draft until 16 September 2022. The third chapter provides definitions and addresses the differences between “pseudonymisation” and “anonymisation”. Pseudonymisation represents the processing of data to make it untraceable to a specific data subject without the use of additional information that should be kept separate from the main database. The ICO noted that pseudonymisation could reduce the risk of data breaches and allow the use of data for other purposes can help to reduce risk and allow personal data to be processed for other purposes, such as scientific research and statistical analysis.
