On 20 May 2024, the Automated Vehicles Act 2024 received Royal Assent. The Act came into force as Chapter 10 of the statutes. It established the regulatory framework for automated vehicles, including the self-driving test, authorisation powers, authorised automation features, authorisation requirements, powers to vary, suspend or withdraw authorisations, the register of authorisations, operator licensing, information-collection duties, investigatory powers, civil sanctions, criminal liability, policing powers, marketing restrictions, passenger-service permits and amendments to existing regimes. The Act confirmed that most provisions will commence on dates set by regulations made by the Secretary of State and that different commencement dates may apply for different purposes or areas. It also authorised the Secretary of State to make transitional or saving provisions by regulation. The Act confirmed its short title as the Automated Vehicles Act 2024.
