On 23 May 2024, the Media Bill was adopted by the UK Parliament. Under the Bill, the Office of Communications (Ofcom) would be required to carry out a review of audience protection measures adopted by “on-demand programme service providers” non-UK on-demand programme services to ensure that audiences are appropriately protected from harmful content. This would include an examination of how children can access public service content. Specific audience protection measures include age rating or other classification systems, content warnings, parental controls and age assurance measures. After receiving the royal assent, the relevant parts of the Bill will be implemented by legislative instrument.
