On 24 April 2024, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) closed the public consultation on the voluntary cybersecurity labeling program for consumer Internet of Things (IoT) products. The program aims to assist consumers in making safer purchasing decisions by requiring manufacturers to disclose specific cybersecurity details for authorization to use the FCC IoT Label. The consultation is requesting feedback on the necessity of disclosing the development and deployment locations of product firmware/software in relation to high-risk countries. The aim is to ensure that products do not pose any national security risks. The FCC is considering whether to mandate these disclosures to both the Commission and consumers to increase transparency and trust in the cybersecurity of IoT products.
