Description

Adopted Voluntary Cybersecurity Labeling Program for Smart Devices

On 18 July 2023, the US Biden-Harris Administration adopted a voluntary cybersecurity certification and labelling program called the "US Cyber Trust Mark". The program aims to raise cybersecurity standards for technological devices such as smart refrigerators, microwaves, televisions, climate control systems, and fitness trackers. The US Cyber Trust Mark will enable entities manufacturing technological products to display a logo which indicates that the products meet specific cybersecurity criteria set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. These criteria include aspects such as strong default passwords, data protection, software updates, and incident detection capabilities. Furthermore, the Department of State will work with other states and partners to harmonize standards and recognize similar labelling efforts internationally. The program is anticipated to start in 2024.
