On 10 December 2022, the President of the Republic of Ireland signed the Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022 into law. Besides aiming to strengthen online safety, the Bill also transposes the Audiovisual Media Services Directive and introduces a registration requirement for video-on-demand platforms. The Bill is expected to improve the oversight mechanism of audio-visual media services in Ireland with the creation of a new Media Commission, which will replace Ireland's Broadcasting Authority. On-demand audiovisual media services will be compelled to register with the Media Commission. The Bill will enter into force after an order is issued by the Minister.
