On 11 July 2022, the Seanad Éireann (Irish Parliament) passed Online Safety and Media Regulation Bill 2022. Besides aiming to strengthen online safety, the Bill also intends to transpose the Audiovisual Media Services Directive and introduce a registration requirement for video-on-demand platforms. The Bill is expected to improve the oversight mechanism of audio-visual media services in Ireland with the creation of a new Media Commission, which will replace Ireland's Broadcasting Authority. On-demand audiovisual media services will be compelled to register with the Media Commission.
