European Union: Introduced Proposal for data collection and sharing on short-term rental platforms including data protection measures

On 7 November 2022, the European Commission (EC) issued a Proposal for a Regulation on data collection and sharing relating to short-term accommodation rental services. The Proposal aims to increase transparency in the market. In particular, the Proposal would require platforms to share data on their rentals every month with local authorities. The data that should be shared includes the listing address, the listing type, and personal information about the guests. Furthermore, if the guests are considered to be "legal persons", additional information such as the national business registration number and all of the person's legal representatives would need to be shared. Finally, the Proposal outlines exceptions from data sharing for small and medium-sized businesses. The Proposal goes to the European Parliament and Council of the European Union for approval.
