On 18 July 2022, the Council of the European Union adopted the Digital Markets Act (DMA) outlining interoperability requirements. The DMA states that "gatekeepers" would provide free of charge access to and interoperability with the same operating systems used by the "gatekeeper" to providers of ancillary services, understood as services offered in connection to or with the core platform services. Furthermore, the text specifies that gatekeepers should not be prevented from implementing measures to ensure that interoperability doesn't negatively impact the integrity of the operating systems, cyber security and protection of the end-user data. The DMA will be implemented six months after its publication in the Official Journal of the European Union.
