On 1 August 2022, the “Provisions on the Management of Internet User Account Information” outlining rules for user verification and authentification entered into force. The provisions state that entities providing “internet information services” have to modify their user registration process and require additional information for user identification, including official documents or phone numbers. Furthermore, the “internet information services” providers have to verify existing accounts for compliance with the regulation and notify users to correct their information. The users that provide false information regarding their identity will have their accounts suspended. Finally, “internet information services” providers are required to implement security measures to prevent cyber-attacks, alteration or destruction of personal information stored. In case of noncompliance, service providers face a fine ranging from CNY 10’000 and 100’000.
