On 9 June 2022, the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) adopted the “Provisions on the Management of Internet User Account Information” outlining rules for user verification and authentification. The adopted provisions state that entities providing “internet information services” have to modify their user registration process and require additional information for user identification, including official documents or phone numbers. Furthermore, the provisions stipulate that “internet information services” providers should verify existing accounts for compliance with the regulation and notify users to correct their information. The users that provide false information regarding their identity will have their accounts suspended. Finally, the provisions require service providers to implement security measures to prevent cyber-attacks, alteration or destruction of stored personal information. In case of noncompliance, “internet information services” providers face a fine ranging from CNY 10’000 and 100’000.
