On 1 January 2027, the California Opt Me Out Act enters into force, amending the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 to mandate that internet browsers include a consumer-configurable function to send an opt-out preference signal to businesses with which the consumer interacts online. Browser developers must ensure the functionality is easy to locate and configure and must disclose publicly how the signal operates and its intended effect. The California Privacy Protection Agency may adopt implementing regulations, and browser developers are not liable for violations by businesses that receive the signal.
