On 10 December 2024, the Decree Proposing the Amendment of Various Articles of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, including data protection authority governance, was adopted following Congress's confirmation of the approval of a majority of states, which is necessary for constitutional reforms. The Decree amends various articles of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, focusing on organisational simplification. Under the reforms, a number of autonomous constitutional bodies, including both the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) and the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information, and Protection of Personal Data (INAI), will be eliminated and their powers transferred to other executive bodies, as further specified in the legislation on public administration. The reform enters into effect on the day following its publication in the Official Journal of the Federation, except in some specified cases requiring the enactment of further legislation.
