On 28 November 2024, the Decree Proposing the Amendment of Various Articles of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, including data protection authority governance, was passed by the Mexican Senate. Having been approved by both Chambers of the Legislature, the constitutional reform still requires the approval of the majority of states before adoption. The Decree would amend various articles of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, focusing on organisational simplification. Under the proposed reforms, a number of autonomous constitutional bodies, including both the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) and the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information, and Protection of Personal Data (INAI), would be eliminated and their powers transferred to other executive bodies, as further specified in the legislation on public administration.
