On 23 August 2024, both the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) and the National Institute of Transparency, Access to Information, and Protection of Personal Data (INAI) issued opinions on the proposed Initiative with a Draft Decree Proposing the Amendment of Various Articles of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States. The Inititative foresees governmental reforms which would eliminate both the IFT and the INAI and transfer their powers to other executive bodies. The IFT warned that its elimination would lead to a significant regression in ensuring access to telecommunications and broadcasting services and would undermine competition in these markets, which could harm users and audiences across Mexico. The IFT highlighted its achievements in increasing internet access, reducing communication costs, and maintaining transparency in its regulatory processes. The INAI argued that its dissolution would be a severe blow to transparency and human rights, stressing that its independence is crucial for making impartial decisions free from political interference.
