United States of America: Department of Commerce issued notice of proposed rulemaking on securing the information and communications technology and services supply chain concerning connected vehicles

Description

Department of Commerce issued notice of proposed rulemaking on securing the information and communications technology and services supply chain concerning connected vehicles

On 23 September 2024, the Department of Commerce (DOC), under the direction of President Biden, issued a notice of proposed rulemaking. The proposed rule would prohibit the sale or import of connected vehicles and their components that incorporate certain technologies linked to these nations, including vehicle connectivity systems (VCS) and automated driving systems (ADS). These technologies, which connect vehicles to external networks and allow autonomous operation, present risks of data exploitation and infrastructure disruption. The prohibitions would phase in, starting with software restrictions for Model Year 2027 and hardware restrictions for Model Year 2030.
