Announced ANPD investigation into Meta's compliance with LGPD in relation to Threads

On 7 July 2023, the Brazilian National Data Protection Authority (ANPD) announced that it had initiated studies to analyse the processing of personal data by the company Meta regarding its platform Threads. According to the ANPD, the studies have been launched in response to concerns raised by the press and privacy experts regarding potential violations of the General Data Protection Law (LGPD). Allegations have been made that the platform processes excessive personal data, including sensitive information like health and fitness data, without a specific purpose. The ANPD is looking to assess the impact of Meta's data collection and usage, with the aim of ensuring compliance with Brazilian laws and protecting individuals' rights. The results of the studies will determine if the ANPD takes further investigative action. The ANPD also noted that Threads has not been introduced in the European Union due to concerns about meeting data protection and competition regulations.
