Issued Ruling in Missouri et al v. Biden concerning undue influence on social media platforms regarding online content moderation

On 4 July 2023, the US District Court Western District of Louisiana issued its ruling in the case State of Missouri et al v. Biden filed by the attorneys general of Missouri and Louisiana on May 5, 2022. The judgement prohibits certain government agencies and officials from meeting and communicating with social media companies for the purpose of moderating content posted on social media platforms, including through flagging content or posts for removal, requesting companies to change their guidelines for online content, requesting content reports from social media companies, among others. The judgment clarified that government agencies and officials are only allowed to inform or contact social media companies on content related to national security threats, criminal activity, cyber-attacks, malicious cyber activity, public safety and other related activities.
