On 16 February 2023, Bill HF 1892, requiring consumer consent prior to the collection of personal information, was introduced in the Minnesota House of Representatives. The Bill is the companion bill of SF 950, introduced in the Minnesota Senate on 30 January 2023. The Bill would prohibit businesses from collecting, using, or disclosing personal information without first obtaining the consumer's consent. While obtaining the consumer's consent, the business would be required to inform the consumer about the categories and purposes of the collected information, as well as the categories of third parties to which each type of information may be disclosed. In case of non-compliance, businesses face a civil penalty of a maximum of USD 7'500. The Bill would be enforced by the Attorney General and would be effective as of 31 July 2025 if signed into law.
