On 9 February 2023, the Industry, Research and Energy Committee of the European Parliament adopted its general approach on the proposed Regulation, establishing a framework for a European Digital Identity (eID). The Regulation aims to ensure "secure and trustworthy" electronic identification and authentication through a personal digital wallet on a mobile phone. The amendments introduced by the European Parliament further expand the potential use cases for the European Digital Identity Wallet and require each Member State to approve at least one national Wallet, which would then be rendered interoperable at the EU level. The Regulation would also include provisions concerning minimum security features to protect personal identification data.
