On 4 January 2023, the India National Company Law Appellate Tribunal denied Google's request to block the cease and desist order by the Competition Commission of India (CCI) (Case Number 1/ND/2023). The Tribunal noted that no urgency was shown in the filing of the appeal (which was filed in December 2022) and rejected Google's request for an interim order. The Tribunal scheduled an appeal hearing on 3 April 2023 and directed Google to deposit 10% of the penalty amount within three weeks. On 20 October 2022, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) concluded that Google had leveraged its dominant position in the online search and app store markets to deny competitors market entry and maintain its dominant position, and used mandatory pre-installation of Google Mobile Suite to impose unfair conditions on mobile device manufacturers. The CCI fined Google INR 1337.76 crore (USD 162 million) and issued a cease and desist order directing the company to modify its conduct. For instance, Google cannot prohibit un-installing of its apps by Android users in India and Google's licensing of its Play Store cannot be linked with the requirement of pre-installing Google applications (e.g. Google search services, the Chrome browser, YouTube).
