CCI fines Google for abuse of dominance regarding the Android Mobile Operating System

On 20 October 2022, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) fined Google INR 1337.76 crore (USD 162 million) and issued a cease and desist order for reportedly abusing its dominant position in a number of markets through its Android Mobile Operating System. In their investigation, the Commission concluded that Google had leveraged its dominant position in the online search and app store markets to deny competitors market entry and maintain its dominant position, and used mandatory pre-installation of Google Mobile Suite to impose unfair conditions on mobile device manufacturers. In addition to the fine, the CCI issued a cease and desist order directing the company to modify its conduct. For instance, Google cannot prohibit un-installing of its apps by Android users in India and Google's licensing of its Play Store cannot be linked with the requirement of pre-installing Google applications (e.g. Google search services, the Chrome browser, YouTube).
