On 28 November 2022, UK Department for Digital, Culture, Media & Sport announced new amendments to the Online Safety Bill. The amended Bill will replace the "legal but harmful" approach to online safety with the so-called "triple shield", which requires service providers to remove illegal content and content that violates terms of service, and provide adult users with wider control over the content that is shown. Moreover, companies will be required to improve transparency about the risks for children and they will have to disclose the implementation of user age limits. The Bill will also include penal measures to ban actions such as assisting or encouraging self-harm and sharing intimate pictures without consent. Notably, the amended Bill will remove the "harmful communications offence" that was included in the previous version of the Bill. The first amendments to the Bill will be brought before Parliament on 5 December 2022.
