On 25 November 2016, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) adopted the “ASEAN Framework on Personal Data Protection 2016”. The Framework seeks to strengthen the protection of personal data in ASEAN, and to facilitate cooperation among ASEAN members in order to contribute to the promotion and growth of regional and global trade and the flow of information. The Framework establishes the following principles governing personal data protection, consent, notification and purpose, accuracy, security safeguards, access and correction, cross-border transfer, retention and accountability.
