Russian court imposes fine on Airbnb, Twitch, UPS and Pinterest for non-compliance with data localisation requirement

On 28 June 2022, the Magistrate's Court of the Tagansky District of Moscow issued a ruling in the case brought before the Court by the Federal Service for Supervision of Communications, Information Technology and Mass Media of Russia, Roskomnadzor against Airbnb, Twitch, United Parcel Shipping (UPS), and Pinterest. The Court found the companies in violation of the country’s data protection legislation for failing to store the personal data of Russian users in Russia, as required by Article 18 of Federal Law-152. The court issued a fine of approximately RUB 2 million each for Twitch Interactive, Pinterest, and Airbnb, and a fine of RUB 1 million for United Parcel Service.
