Consultation opens on Social Media (Anti-Trolling) Act containing local operation requirements

On 17 December 2021, the public consultation on the Social Media (Anti-Trolling) Bill 2021 opened. The Australian Government issued an exposure draft of the Social Media (Anti-Trolling) Bill on 1 December 2021. The stakeholders are invited to submit their feedback until 21 January 2022. The bill requires any foreign provider of a social media service with at least 250'000 Australian account-holders to have a nominated entity in Australia, that has access to contact details of the service users and control of the complaints scheme settled for defamation procedures.
