Indonesia: Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs announced investigation into Grok over alleged misuse to produce and distribute explicit content

On 7 January 2026, Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs announced an investigation into Grok AI on the platform X over alleged misuse to produce and distribute explicit content. According to the Ministry's preliminary findings, Grok lacked adequate safeguards to prevent the creation and distribution of pornographic content based on actual content of Indonesian citizens, posing risks to privacy and the right to one's image. The Ministry stated that it could take administrative measures if X was found to be non-compliant or uncooperative, including suspending access to Grok and the platform X. Further, both providers and users found to have produced or distributed pornographic content could face both administrative and criminal sanctions.
