On 2 April 2025, the Bill mandating disclosure of the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in political communications was adopted by the legislature of North Dakota. The Bill mandates that any content created in whole or in part using AI to impersonate a human, whether visually or audibly, and used for a political purpose, including supporting or opposing candidates, political parties, or ballot measures, must include the disclaimer that the content is generated by AI. The bill exempts AI use limited to non-impersonative functions, including grammar correction or stylistic editing, and defines AI as a machine-based system that generates content based on human-defined objectives or data patterns, excluding tools that only provide linguistic assistance.
