Description

Office of the Australian Information Commissioner opened consultation on Children’s Online Privacy Code under Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024

On 16 May 2025, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) opened a consultation to gather views on how children’s privacy can be better protected online. The consultation will remain open until 30 June 2025. It will inform the development of the Children’s Online Privacy Code, which will set out rules for online services such as social media platforms, messaging apps, and cloud storage providers regarding the handling of children’s personal data. To support participation, the OAIC released tailored worksheets and a discussion paper. A draft Code is scheduled for release in early 2026, with final implementation due by 10 December 2026.
