On 15 April 2025, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) issued an update on the development of the Children's Online Privacy Code. The code would enhance privacy protections for children and young people in Australia. The OAIC is undertaking consultations to ensure the code meets community expectations and effectively addresses the unique challenges faced by young internet users. The development process includes multiple phases of engagement, starting with consultations with children, young people, and relevant organisations focused on children's welfare, which began in January 2025. The second phase, commencing in April 2025, involves engaging with industry, civil society, and academia to gather insights and perspectives. The third phase, scheduled for 2026, will feature a public consultation period on the draft code, lasting a minimum of 60 days, allowing the public and stakeholders to review and provide feedback. The final code is planned to be in place by 10 December 2026.
