Office of the Australian Information Commissioner announced development of the Children’s Online Privacy Code

On 19 February 2025, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner (OAIC) announced the development of the Children's Online Privacy Code, as required by the Australian Privacy and Other Legislation Amendment Act 2024. The Code will outline how online services accessed by children will comply with the Australian Privacy Principles and may introduce additional requirements. Its development will include research, evidence gathering, and consultations with children, families, privacy experts, and international privacy frameworks. The Children's Online Privacy Code will apply to organisations covered by the Privacy Act 1988 (APP entities) that provide social media, electronic communications, or content-sharing services likely to be accessed by children, excluding those providing health services. The code must be in place by 10 December 2026.
