United States of America: Bill amending Consumer Data Protection Act to Prohibit Addictive Social Media Feeds (SB 854) passed the Virginia House of Delegates

On 20 February 2025, the Bill amending the Consumer Data Protection Act to Prohibit Addictive Social Media Feeds (SB 854) was passed in the Virginia House of Delegates, having previously been passed by the Senate. The Bill stipulates that platforms must implement age verification and limits minors under the age of 16 to one hour of social media use per day, unless parental consent allows for adjustments. The Bill also imposes restrictions on the use of data collected for age verification purposes and prohibits platforms from degrading, withholding, or increasing the price of services for users who are denied addictive feeds under these provisions. The Bill is set to take effect on 1 January 2026.
