European Union: EDPB published updated criteria for selection of cases of “strategic importance” for closer cooperation between Data Protection Authorities

On 12 February 2025, the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) published updated criteria for selecting cross-border cases of “strategic importance” to allow strategic enforcement cooperation between EU Data Protection Authorities. The updated version contains information on case selection, working on a strategic case as well as on closing a strategic case. The strategic cases can be proposed by any European Supervisory Authority whenever a case overlaps with other areas of law, affects a large number of data subjects in more than one Member State, involves a large number of complaints in several Member States, poses a high risk under the GDPR or a structural or recurrent problem in the several Member States.
