On 10 December 2024, the Decree Proposing the Amendment of Various Articles of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, including competition authority governance, was adopted following Congress's confirmation of the approval of a majority of states, which is necessary for constitutional reforms. The Decree amends various articles of the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States, focusing on organisational simplification. Under the reforms, a number of autonomous constitutional bodies, including both the Federal Economic Competition Commission (COFECE) and the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT), will be eliminated and their powers transferred to other executive bodies, as further specified in the legislation on public administration. COFECE and IFT cease to operate after the adoption of new competition and telecommunications laws, including the establishment of a new competition agency.
