On 1 December 2024, Directive (EU) 2024/2831 on improving working conditions in platform work ("Platform Work Directive"), including data protection for workers, enters into force with a grace period. The Member States are required to transpose and apply the requirements from 2 December 2026. Under the Directive, digital platforms will be prohibited from processing workers' data on emotional or psychological state, data that could infer sensitive information such as racial or ethnic origin, political or religious beliefs, migration status, health or potential trade union activity. The processing of biometric data will be allowed only for authentication purposes, and platforms will be prohibited from collecting personal data if the person is not performing the platform work.
