On 24 May 2024, the Merger Control and Antitrust Rules in Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill received Royal Assent. The Bill repeals and retains the rights in the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations. In particular, the Bill prohibits entities from engaging in practices classified as "unfair commercial practices", including misleading actions and omissions, aggressive practices or actions that would contravene the "requirements of professional diligence". Furthermore, the Bill enables the government to expand the list of "unfair commercial practices". Finally, the Bill gives the Competition and Markets Authority the power to enforce the consumer protection provisions outlined in the Bill.
