United Kingdom: Introduced Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill including consumer protection regulation

Description

Introduced Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill including consumer protection regulation

On 25 April 2023, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Bill, including consumer protection regulation, was introduced in the UK House of Commons. The Bill would repeal and retain the rights in the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations. In particular, the Bill would prohibit entities from engaging in practices classified as “unfair commercial practices”, including misleading actions and omissions, aggressive practices or actions that would contravene the ”requirements of professional diligence”. Furthermore, the Bill would enable the government to expand the list of “unfair commercial practices”. Finally, the Bill would give the Competition and Markets Authority the power to enforce the consumer protection provisions outlined in the Bill.
